Tool Disclaimer & Limitations

1. Introduction

The Fashion Sustainability Index ("FSI" or "Tool") is provided by The Thread Revolution ("we," "us," or "our") as a free educational resource designed to help consumers make more informed decisions about the environmental impact of fashion products.


By using this Tool, you acknowledge that you have read, understood, and agree to be bound by this disclaimer. If you do not agree with any part of this disclaimer, you should not use the Tool.

2. Nature of the Tool

2.1 Educational Purpose

The FSI is provided strictly for educational and informational purposes only. It is not intended to serve as, and should not be construed as:

  • Professional environmental consulting or auditing

  • Certification of environmental claims

  • Legal, financial, or investment advice

  • A substitute for professional sustainability assessments

  • Verification of brand or manufacturer claims

2.2 Estimates and Averages

All scores generated by the FSI are estimates based on category averages, not measurements of specific products. The scores reflect general characteristics of material categories, brand practices, and production regions based on publicly available research and industry data.

3. Data and Methodology

3.1 Data Sources

Our scores are derived from publicly available sources including:

  • Peer-reviewed Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) studies

  • Industry databases (Higg Materials Sustainability Index, Textile Exchange)

  • Government environmental databases

  • Third-party certification body data

  • Published corporate sustainability reports

 

While we strive to use credible, recent sources (preferring data from 2022 onwards), we cannot guarantee the accuracy, completeness, or currency of external data sources.

3.2 Methodology Limitations

Our scoring methodology involves inherent limitations:

  • Weighting of environmental factors involves value judgments

  • Some criteria are assessed qualitatively where quantitative data is unavailable

  • Regional variations may not be fully captured

  • Supply chain complexity makes complete assessment impossible

  • The methodology may be updated as new research becomes available

4. Accuracy and Reliability

4.1 No Guarantee of Accuracy

We make no representations or warranties regarding the accuracy, reliability, completeness, or timeliness of any information provided through the Tool. Specifically:

  • Individual products may vary significantly from category averages

  • Brand practices may have changed since our last assessment

  • Production conditions vary by factory, season, and batch

  • New research may contradict previous findings

4.2 Accuracy Indicator

The Tool provides an "Accuracy" percentage indicating data completeness. This reflects how much information was available for the calculation, not the correctness of the underlying data. A 100% accuracy score means all input categories (materials, brand, region) were provided—it does not guarantee the score reflects the actual environmental impact of any specific product.

5. Brand and Product Information

5.1 Third-Party Information

Information about brands, materials, and production regions is compiled from third-party sources. We do not have direct relationships with the brands assessed, and inclusion in our database does not imply endorsement, partnership, or verification of their sustainability claims.

5.2 No Endorsement

A high score does not constitute an endorsement or recommendation of any brand or product. A low score does not constitute criticism or disparagement. Scores reflect our interpretation of publicly available data based on our published methodology.

5.3 Brand Right to Respond

Brands that believe their assessment is inaccurate may contact us with supporting documentation. We will review such information in good faith and may update our database accordingly.

6. Limitation of Liability

To the fullest extent permitted by applicable law:

6.1 The Thread Revolution, its owner, employees, and affiliates shall not be liable for any direct, indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages arising from:

  • Your use of or inability to use the Tool

  • Any decisions made based on information from the Tool

  • Errors, inaccuracies, or omissions in the data or scores

  • Changes to methodology or scores over time

  • Any dispute with brands, manufacturers, or other third parties

 

6.2 This limitation applies regardless of the legal theory under which liability is asserted, including negligence, breach of contract, or strict liability.

7. Disclaimer of Warranties

THE TOOL IS PROVIDED "AS IS" AND "AS AVAILABLE" WITHOUT WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND, EITHER EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, AND NON-INFRINGEMENT.


We do not warrant that the Tool will be uninterrupted, error-free, or free of viruses or other harmful components.

8. User Responsibilities

By using the Tool, you agree to:

  • Use the scores as one factor among many in your purchasing decisions

  • Conduct your own research before making important decisions

  • Not rely solely on this Tool for professional sustainability assessments

  • Acknowledge the inherent limitations of any sustainability scoring system

  • Not misrepresent scores as official certifications or endorsements

9. Changes to Data and Methodology

We reserve the right to modify our methodology, update scores, add or remove materials/brands/regions from our database, and change the Tool's functionality at any time without prior notice. Historical scores may not be comparable to current scores.

10. Intellectual Property

The FSI methodology, scoring system, and presentation are the intellectual property of The Thread Revolution. Users may not reproduce, distribute, or commercially exploit the Tool or its outputs without written permission.


Brand names, trademarks, and logos mentioned in the Tool remain the property of their respective owners. Their inclusion does not imply any affiliation or endorsement.

11. Governing Law

This disclaimer shall be governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of the Federal Republic of Germany. Any disputes arising from the use of this Tool shall be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of Munich, Germany.
