5 of the most sustainable women's t-shirts for summer

  • May 12
  • 8 min read

The humble t-shirt is probably the hardest-working piece in your wardrobe, and that makes it one of the most important places to make a sustainable choice. The problem is that every brand claims to be "eco-friendly" and very few give you the data to back it up.

We scored these five women's t-shirts using the Fashion Sustainability Index, our methodology that evaluates materials across carbon footprint, water use, pollution, chemical impact and biodegradability, then factors in brand ethics and third-party certifications. What follows is a transparent, numbers-first look at which t-shirts genuinely earn their sustainability credentials and which trade-offs come with each.

How we score

Every product in our Thread Finder database is scored on a 100-point scale. Materials make up 70% of each product's score, assessed across five environmental criteria: carbon footprint, water consumption, pollution output, chemical intensity and biodegradability. Brand ethics account for the remaining 30%, covering labour practices, transparency, environmental initiatives and certifications. Products also earn certification bonuses when they carry verified third-party standards like GOTS or Fair Trade — these are added to the material side of the formula before weighting.

Only products scoring 60 or above make it into the Thread Finder. You can read our full methodology on our How We Score page.

The products

1. Eve T-Shirt Thats Weird Offwhite — Nudie Jeans

Sustainability score: 90/100 Material: 85/100 | Certs: +7 | Brand: 86/100

Nudie Jeans takes the top spot by combining one of the highest brand ethics scores in our database with strong certified organic cotton and a double certification bonus. It is the rare t-shirt where the brand's practices are almost as impressive as the materials themselves.

Made from 100% GOTS-certified organic cotton in a lightweight 1x1 rib, the Eve scores 85 on the material side thanks to organic cotton's low chemical impact and full biodegradability. The GOTS certification adds 5 points for verified supply chain standards, and the Fair Trade certification stacks another 2 points, bringing the total certification bonus to 7.

The slim fit with cap sleeves and a narrow bound neck gives this a more structured feel than a typical relaxed tee. The rib construction offers good breathability for summer, though the slim cut means it runs closer to the body. Expect a dry hand-feel rather than a soft, washed-in texture.

This sits in the premium tier for t-shirts. Available directly from nudiejeans.com, which ships internationally, and the brand's well-known repair programme extends the garment's life beyond the initial purchase.

The main trade-off is that premium-tier pricing and the slim fit will not suit everyone. If you prefer a looser silhouette or a more affordable option, the ARMEDANGELS entry at number 3 is worth a look.

2. Faye Tee — Kuyichi

Sustainability score: 89/100 Material: 85/100 | Certs: +6 | Brand: 83/100

Kuyichi's Faye Tee is one point behind the top spot, earning its rank through a solid organic cotton base paired with two certifications that together add 6 bonus points. As one of the original sustainable denim pioneers, Kuyichi brings decades of supply chain commitment to what is essentially a simple, well-made t-shirt.

The Faye is made from 100% GOTS-certified organic cotton, scoring 85 on the material side, identical to the Nudie Jeans entry. The difference lies in the certifications: GOTS contributes 5 points, and OEKO-TEX 100 adds another 1 point (at half value), confirming the finished product has been tested for harmful substances.

This is a regular-fit crewneck built for everyday comfort. The organic cotton jersey is breathable and holds its shape through repeated washes. It does not stretch, so sizing is straightforward. Order your usual size and expect a consistent fit over time.

The Faye sits at the lower end of the premium tier. Available directly from kuyichi.com, which ships internationally. Kuyichi's Fair Wear Foundation Leader status means the labour conditions behind this t-shirt have been independently audited.

The trade-off here is availability. Kuyichi is a smaller Dutch brand without a wide network of third-party stockists, so you are largely limited to ordering from their own site.

3. IDAARA T-SHIRT — ARMEDANGELS

Sustainability score: 88/100 Material: 85/100 | Certs: +5 | Brand: 84/100

The IDAARA is ARMEDANGELS' self-described bestseller, and it is easy to see why. As the only mid-range option in this roundup, it delivers an 88 sustainability score — making it comfortably the best value option on this list. The brand's strong ethics score of 84 is backed by Fair Wear Foundation Leader status and top marks from Good On You.

Made from 100% GOTS-certified organic cotton in a mid-weight jersey, the IDAARA shares the same 85 material score as the two products above it. The single GOTS certification adds a 5-point bonus. Where it falls behind the Nudie and Kuyichi entries is purely in the certification stack, one cert instead of two.

The relaxed fit and mid-weight fabric make this a versatile everyday tee. It is breathable enough for warm weather without being so light that it feels flimsy. The subtle logo embroidery is minimal and does not detract from the clean silhouette.

This is firmly in the mid-range tier and is the most affordable option in the roundup by a significant margin. Available directly from armedangels.com, which ships internationally, or through selected third-party retailers.

The trade-off is that ARMEDANGELS' relaxed fit will not appeal to those who prefer a closer-fitting silhouette. The brand does offer slimmer cuts, but the IDAARA is their flagship relaxed style.

4. Green Lake T-shirt — Ecoalf

Sustainability score: 86/100 Material: 86.9/100 | Certs: +3 | Brand: 77/100

Ecoalf's Green Lake is the only blended-fabric option in this list to outperform some pure organic cotton entries on material score alone. The 52/48 split of organic cotton and Tencel lyocell produces a weighted material score of 86.9 — actually the highest raw material figure in this roundup — because Tencel lyocell scores 89 in our system, pulling the blend above pure organic cotton's 85.

The OCS certification verifies the organic cotton content in the blend, adding a 3-point bonus. Where the Green Lake loses ground is on the brand side: Ecoalf scores 77, which is respectable (B-Corp certified with strong recycled-material innovation) but notably lower than the three brands above it.

The cotton-Tencel blend gives this t-shirt a noticeably different hand-feel from the pure cotton options. Tencel adds a subtle drape and softness, and the garment-washed finish enhances that from the first wear. It is breathable and lightweight — a strong choice for the warmest days.

The Green Lake sits comfortably in the mid-range tier. Available directly from ecoalf.com, which ships internationally.

The trade-off is that Tencel-blend fabrics can be less durable over many washes than pure organic cotton. The garment-washed finish also means the fabric may soften further with wear, which some may find too relaxed over time.

5. Max Slim Tee — Reformation

Sustainability score: 83/100 Material: 86.6/100 | Certs: +3 | Brand: 69/100

Reformation's Max Slim Tee demonstrates a pattern worth understanding: strong materials can carry a product even when the brand score is the weakest in the lineup. The 60/40 blend of organic cotton and Tencel lyocell produces a material score of 86.6, which is nearly identical to the Ecoalf entry. However, Reformation's brand score of 69 — the lowest here — pulls the final number down to 83.

That brand score reflects real gaps. While Reformation uses an impressive 98% sustainable or recycled materials and has science-based climate targets, the brand currently has no B-Corp or Fair Trade certification, and living wage coverage across its supply chain remains a work in progress.

The slim fit with a crew neckline gives this a more polished, body-conscious shape. The cotton-Tencel blend is smooth and lightweight, with a slight drape that works well for both casual and slightly dressed-up contexts.

The Max Slim Tee sits in the premium tier. Available from thereformation.com, which ships internationally.

The trade-off is the brand ethics gap. If you prioritise supply chain transparency and labour standards as much as materials, the three options above offer stronger credentials at the same or lower price tiers.

How to choose

If sustainability credentials are your top priority regardless of budget, the Nudie Jeans Eve is the clear winner at 90/100 — it combines excellent materials with one of the strongest brand ethics profiles in our database. For the best value, the ARMEDANGELS IDAARA delivers an 88 score in the mid-range tier while most other options here sit at premium, making it the obvious pick if you want a high-scoring tee without stretching your budget.

If fabric feel matters most, the two cotton-Tencel blends from Ecoalf and Reformation offer a softer drape and lighter hand-feel than pure organic cotton, which makes them particularly suited to the hottest days. Between the two, the Ecoalf Green Lake edges ahead on overall score and sits in the more accessible mid-range tier. And if you want a reliable, everyday regular-fit option backed by decades of organic supply chain work, the Kuyichi Faye Tee is a quietly impressive choice.

What we left out and why

Several well-known sustainable brands did not make this list. Some had women's t-shirts that scored below our 60-point threshold due to conventional material blends despite the brand's overall reputation. Others lacked current-season availability or relied on materials we have not yet scored in the Fashion Sustainability Index, which would have produced an incomplete assessment.

A pattern worth noting in this category: many "sustainable" t-shirts still use vague claims like "eco-friendly fabric" or "responsible cotton" without third-party certification to back them up. The products that rank highest here all carry independently verified certifications — GOTS, Fair Trade, OCS or OEKO-TEX — which is what separates genuine sustainability from marketing language. When shopping beyond this list, checking for those certification labels on the product page is the single most useful habit you can build.

The verdict

The Nudie Jeans Eve T-Shirt Thats Weird Offwhite takes our top recommendation with a score of 90/100, combining GOTS-certified organic cotton with Fair Trade manufacturing and one of the strongest brand ethics records in our system. But the "best" t-shirt depends on what you value most. The ARMEDANGELS IDAARA proves that a high sustainability score does not require a premium price, and the Ecoalf Green Lake shows that a thoughtful material blend can actually outperform pure organic cotton on raw material score.

Every product on this list scores above 80 and has been independently certified to at least one recognised standard. That is a solid foundation for any wardrobe decision.
