5 of the most sustainable men's t-shirts for summer

  • May 12
  • 7 min read

The humble t-shirt is probably the most-worn item in your wardrobe, which makes it one of the most impactful places to start buying more sustainably. The problem is that most "best sustainable t-shirt" lists give you vague ratings with no real way to compare one pick against another. You're left trusting someone's gut feeling about whether a brand is "good" or "great."

We took a different approach. Every t-shirt in this guide has been scored using the Fashion Sustainability Index (FSI), our methodology that evaluates products across material impact, third-party certifications and brand ethics. The result is a number out of 100, transparent, comparable and backed by data. We scored five men's t-shirts from brands that meet our minimum threshold of 60/100. Here's what we found.

How we score

Materials make up 70% of each product's sustainability score. We assess every material across five environmental criteria — carbon footprint, water usage, pollution, chemical impact and biodegradability — using peer-reviewed lifecycle data. Products with verified third-party certifications like GOTS, bluesign or Fair Trade earn a certification bonus on top of their material score, rewarding brands that back their claims with independent verification. Brand ethics account for the remaining 30%, covering labour practices, supply chain transparency, environmental initiatives and certifications at the company level.

Only products scoring 60 or above make it into the Thread Finder, our guided shopping tool. Every score shown here comes directly from that database, not from subjective judgment. For the full methodology, visit our How We Score page.

1. Men's Strataspire Responsibili-Tee — Patagonia

Sustainability score: 89/100 Material: 84.5/100 | Certs: +6 | Brand: 87/100

Patagonia's Strataspire takes the top spot thanks to the strongest brand ethics score in this lineup, a material composition built entirely from recycled fibres, and the highest certification bonus of any product in this guide. When a product pairs a brand score of 87 with 100% recycled fabric and dual third-party certifications, the result is a sustainability profile that's difficult to beat.

The Strataspire is made from 50% recycled cotton and 50% postconsumer recycled polyester. Recycled cotton scores 92 in our materials database — one of the highest-rated materials we track — because it avoids the water and chemical burden of growing new cotton. The recycled polyester component scores 77, dragged down slightly by microplastic concerns and lower biodegradability, but still a strong performer for a synthetic. Together they produce a blended material score of 84.5. The t-shirt carries both bluesign and Fair Trade Certified labels, earning a certification bonus of 6 points for verified chemical safety and fair factory conditions.

For summer wear, this is a reliable everyday tee. The recycled cotton-polyester blend sits in the middle of the road on breathability and lightweight feel — it won't be as airy as pure linen, but it holds its shape well and dries faster than all-cotton options. The relaxed fit gives it a casual, easy-wearing feel.

The main trade-off is that the recycled polyester content means this tee will shed microplastics when washed. A microfibre-catching wash bag is worth considering if you choose this one.

2. Linen T-Shirt — KnowledgeCotton Apparel

Sustainability score: 88/100 Material: 89/100 | Certs: +5 | Brand: 75/100

KnowledgeCotton Apparel's linen tee earns its rank through sheer material strength. With a material score of 89 and a GOTS certification bonus of 5 points, it has the highest-scoring fabric profile in this guide — organic linen is one of the most sustainable textiles available, requiring minimal water and no synthetic pesticides. What keeps it just behind Patagonia is a lower brand score of 75, still well above our threshold but not in the top tier.

Made from 100% GOTS-certified organic linen, this t-shirt scores exceptionally across our environmental criteria. Linen is naturally biodegradable, has a low carbon footprint relative to cotton, and the organic certification means the flax was grown without synthetic chemicals. The GOTS label adds verified supply chain oversight from raw fibre through to the finished garment, contributing a 5-point certification bonus to the material side of the score.

This is the standout pick for hot weather. Linen rates 5 out of 5 for breathability in our property database and 4 out of 5 for lightweight feel — the highest in both categories on this list. The natural texture develops character with wear, softening over time while keeping you cool. The relaxed fit with dropped shoulders gives it a laid-back summer silhouette.

The trade-off is the price point and the nature of linen itself — it wrinkles easily and has a more textured look than cotton jersey. If you prefer a smooth, structured finish, this isn't the one.

3. JAAMES T-Shirt — ARMEDANGELS

Sustainability score: 88/100 Material: 85/100 | Certs: +5 | Brand: 84/100

The JAAMES is a masterclass in doing the basics well. It has the most balanced combination of material score, certification bonus and brand ethics on this list — 85, +5 and 84 respectively — delivering the same overall score as the KnowledgeCotton linen tee through a completely different profile.

Made from 100% GOTS-certified organic cotton, the JAAMES hits all the right marks for a straightforward sustainable tee. Organic cotton scores 85 in our database, performing strongly on chemical impact and biodegradability while using less water than conventional cotton. The GOTS certification earns a 5-point bonus and ensures the organic claim is verified through every stage of production.

For everyday wear, this is the most versatile option. The regular fit sits between the relaxed cuts of the Patagonia and KnowledgeCotton options, making it easy to dress up or down. Organic cotton jersey is breathable enough for summer, soft from the first wear, and holds its shape well through repeated washing. It's not the lightest or most breathable pick here, but it's the most dependable all-rounder.

The trade-off is that the colour range in the current season is narrower than some competitors.

4. White Limbe T-Shirt — Ecoalf

Sustainability score: 85/100 Material: 86.9/100 | Certs: +2 | Brand: 77/100

Ecoalf's Limbe stands out for its material blend. A 52/48 mix of organic cotton and TENCEL lyocell produces one of the most interesting fabric compositions in this guide and a material score of 86.9 that's second only to the KnowledgeCotton linen. The blend combines cotton's familiarity with lyocell's silky drape, creating a fabric that feels noticeably different from a standard cotton tee.

Organic cotton contributes durability and breathability, while TENCEL lyocell, scored at 89 in our database, brings excellent environmental credentials. Lyocell is produced in a closed-loop process that recovers and reuses solvents, dramatically reducing chemical waste. Together, the blend scores well across all five of our environmental criteria. The ICEA certification adds a 2-point bonus for Italian environmental and ethical verification.

In terms of feel, the lyocell content gives this tee a softer, more fluid drape than pure cotton options. It's breathable and comfortable for summer, though the relaxed fit and lighter construction mean it's best suited to casual settings rather than layering.

The trade-off is the price-to-basics ratio. A t-shirt that doesn't have the breathability advantage of linen or the recycled credentials of the Patagonia, some readers may find better value elsewhere on this list. It's the right choice if the fabric blend and drape appeal to you specifically.

5. Liam Pepper Tee — Kuyichi

Sustainability score: 84/100 Material: 85/100 | Certs: +0 | Brand: 83/100

Kuyichi's Liam Pepper rounds out the list with a solid score that reflects strong brand ethics and reliable materials. Like the ARMEDANGELS JAAMES, it's made from 100% organic cotton, giving it the same material score of 85, but without a product-level certification to add a bonus, and with a slightly lower brand score of 83, it sits four points behind despite using the same core fabric.

The organic cotton composition means the same environmental strengths apply here: low chemical impact, full biodegradability, and reduced water usage compared to conventional cotton. Where the Liam Pepper differentiates itself is in weight and character. This is described as a heavyweight tee, making it a sturdier option than the lighter picks in this guide. The faded vintage graphic on the back gives it more personality than a plain tee.

The heavier weight makes this less ideal for peak summer heat but a strong choice for cooler evenings or transitional weather. The regular fit and crewneck keep it classic. The organic cotton jersey will soften with washing while the heavier construction should hold its shape longer than lighter-weight alternatives.

The trade-off is the price for what is essentially a graphic tee in organic cotton. The Kuyichi brand commands a premium, and the heavyweight construction limits its versatility in hotter weather. If you want organic cotton at a fraction of the cost, the ARMEDANGELS JAAMES is the smarter pick.

How to choose

If your priority is the strongest overall sustainability credentials regardless of price, the Patagonia Strataspire leads at 89 with the highest brand score, dual certifications and a fully recycled composition. For the hottest days of summer where breathability matters most, the KnowledgeCotton Apparel linen tee is in a different league — nothing else on this list matches organic linen for keeping you cool, and at 88 the score is right behind.

If value for money is what drives your decision, the ARMEDANGELS JAAMES is difficult to argue with. It scores 88 — just one point off the top — while costing less than half of every other option here. The Ecoalf Limbe is worth considering if you're drawn to the feel of a cotton-lyocell blend — it's a different wearing experience from pure cotton. And the Kuyichi Liam Pepper suits anyone looking for a heavier, more structured tee with some graphic character for the cooler edges of summer.

The verdict

The Patagonia Men's Strataspire Responsibili-Tee takes our top recommendation at 89/100, combining the strongest brand ethics with a fully recycled fabric composition and the highest certification bonus in this guide. But there's a strong field behind it — the ARMEDANGELS JAAMES scores 88 at roughly a third of the price, and the KnowledgeCotton linen tee matches that score while being unmatched for summer breathability. The certification bonuses make a real difference here: the five-point gap between Patagonia and Kuyichi comes largely from verified third-party certifications rather than materials alone. Every product here scores well above our 60-point threshold, so whichever you choose, you're making a genuinely data-backed decision.
